We're in the Beauty era, which means, when it comes to foundation ranges, we are tolerating nothing short of greatness. We do not want it -- if it comes in five shades. Women of color have been notoriously overlooked in the makeup department. It's one reason why OG manufacturers, Make Up For Ever and such as MAC, and new kids on block, such as Fenty Beauty and Il Makiage, are praised for their incredibly inclusive range of complexion products.
CoverGirl is one brand that has been thinking about women of colour longer than most. Back in 2005, the brand launched the Queen collection especially for girls, and the brand expanded its eyebrow group to include 40 colors of its TruBlend formula. But now, CoverGirl is catering to underserved complexions in a way that is new. A line of cosmetics for women of color, introducing Full Spectrum, developed by a team of women.
Global R&D Face Manager of CoverGirl, johanne Richard, informs Refinery29 that growing this line was important for her since she has had her fair share of confusion in the mixed girl makeup cosmetics aisle. "So a lot of my family and friends have told me stories about blending base shades, so we really wanted to make a collection that addressed the specific nuances of skin."
Her staff and richard spent two decades measuring the skin tones of different people of colour. "Through our research we were able to get a better understanding of the undertones of dark skin -- not only to deliver on shades but on finish, also," says Richard. "Most women of colour are put in the same category, but all of us have different undertones and our complexions are really different." The CoverGirl team surveyed women of colour to find out what this group wants, finding that most search complexion goods finishes, and vibrant colour pigments when picking out makeup.
This research birthed the Full Spectrum collection, which comes with 20 foundation shades for medium-to-deep skin tones, powder foundation, brightening concealer, mattifying primer, eyeshadoweyeliners, lipstick, and much more!
